Getting more work done for ADHD adults

How to get to know your condition and work around it

Adults who experience ADHD can have a hard time staying productive. You can take our test(link) to see whether you are affected or not. You can also learn to get around your ADHD in various creative ways. Planning ahead and knowing yourself can make a huge difference in your daily life.

Here is a list of tips that can help you to stay productive.

  1. Set a specific time frame for the tasks at hand.

One of the signs of ADHD is a poor sense of time. When you give yourself vague time frames, you limit the work that could be done. Instead, make sure to set a specific start and end time for the tasks at hand. This is more effective than letting yourself work on very loose time frames, because it does not allow your mind to wander as much.

2. Use physical exercise as a way to focus yourself before work

A light workout before a boring task will use up some of the nervous energy and reduce the chance of your mind wandering during work. It could be as simple as doing a few push ups or taking a light walk.

3. Use a wall mounted calendar or a whiteboard for your appointments and deadlines

One trick to reducing your mind wandering, is making sure that you have your tasks in front of you, as often as possible. Choose a place that you see often, and place a wall mounted calendar or your to do list in that space. Seeing it in front of you will constantly remind you what needs to be done, and reduce the chance of your mind wandering.

4. Make it clear when it’s your “work time” and let others know about it

A lot of distraction comes from other people. You have to be vigilant about defending and defining your work time, if you want it to be productive. Its very easy to get sidetracked when your colleague or friend interrupts you in your work time. Set aside some of your time for pure work, and let everyone know that you do not wish to be disturbed during those hours.

5. Go through your most important tasks every morning

Reminding yourself of the important things that need to done in the morning is a great way to start the day. Every morning, take a few minutes to go through the most important tasks of the day. Remind yourself when and why they need to be done to keep your mind on track.
